Brainstorming 101: Using Mind Maps to Make Money Online

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend. Saturday I was out purchasing some last minute Christmas gifts and Sunday I visited my 97-year old grandfather at the nursing home. Overall, it was a nice weekend.

Yesterday, I noticed that I had my very first subscriber on RSS. Whoever you are, thank you so much for subscribing to Brainstorming in Motion. I would love it if you introduced yourself in the comments. If you don’t want to, that’s fine too. I’m very shy and usually prefer to lurk rather than post comments so I understand if you don’t want to comment. Those of you who haven’t subscribed yet, please do so by pressing the big orange button in the top right corner of the header. Thanks!

Woman with Mind MapToday I’m going to discuss the awesomeness of mind maps. I’ll show you what they are, how to create one and how to use a mind map to make money online.

Once you learn how great mind maps are, you’ll be using them all the time. They make it so easy to come up with ideas and solutions for just about any problem. I use them all the time to explore new ideas or just to get ideas out of my head and onto paper. It is much easier to figure things out when you can see it right in front of you.

What is a mind map?

According to MindMapping.com,

A mind map is a diagram for representing tasks, words, concepts, or items linked to and arranged around a central concept or subject using a non-linear graphical layout that allows the user to build an intuitive framework around a central concept. A mind map can turn a long list of monotonous information into a colorful, memorable and highly organized diagram that works in line with your brain’s natural way of doing things.

How to Create a Mind Map

I find that creating a mind map can be very therapeutic. It lets you get everything out of your head and onto paper so it can be organized. I know that when I have a ton of ideas floating around in my brain, it can be hard to concentrate, I can’t get any work done, I procrastinate and I feel stressed out. I highly suggest taking 5-10 minutes each day to sit down and create a mind map.

Here is what you’ll need:

  • Computer, tablet, whiteboard, chalkboard or notepad of paper with pen
  • Timer – the one on your smartphone or computer will work
  • Optional: highlighters

That’s it! You don’t need anything else to get started.

Turn off the TV or radio and go into a quiet room. You don’t want any distractions. Grab your tool of choice (from the list above) and put it in front of you. If you are using a computer or a tablet, open a paint type of program – something where you can type out or write random words or phrases anywhere on the screen. I use Adobe Fireworks to create my mind maps but Microsoft Paint would work as well. There are also mind-mapping programs you can purchase to help you out. I haven’t used any of these programs so I don’t have any to recommend.

Set your timer for 5 or 10 minutes and start writing down whatever ideas come into your head – good or bad. Even if it is something weird that doesn’t make any sense at all, write it down. Do not edit – just keep writing until the time is up. If you can, try to keep similar ideas or concepts grouped together on the page. When you are done, circle or highlight the main ideas and connect similar ideas together. Your finished mind map should look something like this:

My Mind Map
This is the mind map I created yesterday. I’ll explain the ideas in a later post.

How can I use mind maps to make money online?

Mind maps are the perfect tool to help you make money online. If you can’t come up with a business to start or a product to sell, try making a mind map. I’m sure you would come up with a few ideas if you just wrote down whatever came into your head. You can also use mind maps to go even deeper. For example, in my mind map, one of the ideas I have for a business is selling products on Amazon. I could take that concept further and create another mind map of different things to sell on Amazon or I could create a mind map of pros and cons of selling on Amazon. The possible uses of mind maps are endless. They are a valuable tool for any online entrepreneur.

What do you think?

Let me know in the comments: What are your thoughts about mind maps? Do you use them regularly? How have they helped you? Have you ever used a mind-mapping program? If so, which one have you used and would you recommend it? I look forward to hearing from you.

  1. I have checked your page and i’ve found some duplicate content, that’s why you don’t rank high in google’s
search results, but there is a tool that can help you to
create 100% unique content, search for: Boorfe’s tips unlimited content

    • Hello TerrellSmall. Thank you for the comment. My content is 100% unique as I write all posts myself. The reason I’m not ranking in Google yet is because my website is so new. Typically, it takes at least 6 months to start ranking in Google depending on the quality of the site and the type of the content (well written, helpful, long posts). Some sites rank in Google faster, especially if they get some natural backlinks and a large social following but that isn’t typical. I hope this info helps some. P.S. Please tell Boorfe to stop spamming blog comments. Thx. 🙂
