New Office Project – Post #2: Planning

Just a fair warning, this post will be a lot of rambling as I talk through my options.

The first thing I need to do when planning out my home office is deciding what I want in my home office. I’ll definitely want a lot of working space. I’ll want space for a computer with a keyboard and a printer as well as space to write letters, fill out forms, get packages ready to send and more. I’m thinking an L-shaped desk would provide plenty of working space.

Another thing I’ll need is storage. I want some drawers to store pens, pencils, staplers, thumbtacks, paperclips, etc. I also have papers that I will want to keep in a file cabinet. A small file cabinet on one side of the L-shaped desk and a set of drawers on the other side should work great.

Of coarse, I’ll need a comfortable desk chair and some shelves above the desk for decorative items and knick-knacks.

Lighting is also important. I’m not exactly sure how I want to light my home office. Maybe some desk lamps as well as an overhead light. I’d love to add pot lights in the ceiling if I can. I’ll mostly be using the space during the day so I probably won’t be using lights too often but it does get dark pretty early in the winter time.

Here is everything I’ll need for my home office (that I can think of at the moment):

L-shaped desk w/file cabinet & set of drawers
Window treatments
Desktop computer & monitor
Keyboard & mouse
Mousepad
Desk chair
Wireless phone charger stand
Pens & pencils
Erasers
Whiteout
Stapler & staples
Paperclips
Rubber bands
Markers
Mailing labels
Envelopes
Stamps
Shipping boxes
Printer paper
Blank postcards
Thank you cards
Label maker, labels & ink
Drawer organizers
Notebooks
Floating shelves
Desk lamp(s)
Primer & paint
Flooring
Window trim & baseboard

I’m sure I’m probably forgetting something but that’s all I can come up with for now. I won’t need all of this stuff right away but I want to eventually have a fully stocked office so I’m not always looking for something or having to buy stuff

I’m going to do some research on this stuff, try to figure out what I want and come up with a budget. Once I know how much this stuff is going to cost, I can start saving. It might be a few months before I can start buying stuff and getting my office put together. I’m working on some other home projects that I’m also saving money for – the big one is my master closet. The closet organizer I want is $500 and I would love to get that purchased and installed before fall so I can get my clothes out of boxes and organized. In the meantime, while I’m waiting, I can figure out what color I’m going to paint my office and how I want to decorate it.
